🏖️ Explore Siquijor: Top 10 unforgettable experiences
Siquijor, a mystical island in the Philippines, offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences. Whether you're a digital nomad looking for your next workation spot or a traveler seeking adventure, Siquijor has something for everyone. Here's our curated list of the top 10 activities you can't miss on this enchanting island.
1. Swim at Cambugahay Falls
Cambugahay Falls is Siquijor's most famous waterfall, and for good reason. This three-tiered cascade offers crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming.
We arrived before 9 AM, heading straight to the highest level. For a blissful hour, we had this paradise to ourselves. The sound of cascading water and chirping birds created a symphony of nature that we'll never forget.
2. Explore Lugnason Falls
While Cambugahay gets all the fame, Lugnason Falls stole our hearts with its secluded charm.
We spent an hour here, often being the only souls around. The refreshing pool at the base of the falls became our private oasis, a stark contrast to the more touristy spots.
Our tuk-tuk driver shared a fascinating tale about Lugnason. Apparently, the falls once dried up due to a disagreement over entrance fees, only to flow again when harmony was restored.
3. Adventure through Cantabon Cave
For us, cave exploration is a must, and Cantabon Cave did not disappoint.
Initially hesitant about the hour-long trek, we found ourselves captivated by the underground world. The challenging passages were balanced by serene cave pools, making every step an adventure.
4. Swim in Sambulawan Cave Underground River
This unique cave system features an underground river that you can swim through. Sambulawan Cave was the highlight of our trip, offering a truly unique experience.
We're half-swimming, half-walking through an underground river, our way lit only by headlamps. The narrow passages initially seemed daunting, but our guide's humor and encouragement turned fear into excitement.
The cool water is refreshing, especially after a hot day of island exploration.
5. Watch the sunset at Paliton Beach
Paliton Beach is renowned for its stunning sunsets, and our experience here was pleasantly surprising.
Contrary to what we'd heard about crowds, we lucked out with a relatively quiet evening at Paliton. The golden hour cast a magical glow over the shoreline, and we found ourselves mesmerized by the changing colors of the sky.
While we had a tranquil experience, it's worth noting that the popularity of sunset at Paliton can mean larger crowds at times. The beach's beauty tends to draw both locals and tourists, especially during peak season.
6. Take a tuk-tuk tour of the island
Renting a tuk-tuk for two full days became our gateway to Siquijor's hidden treasures.
Our drivers were a fountain of local knowledge. They took us to spots we'd never have found on our own and shared stories that brought the island's history to life.
One driver told us about a public pool near the plaza that remains free because every time they introduce a fee, someone has an accident. These little superstitions add to Siquijor's mystical charm.
7. Visit Bucafe for food with a view
Sometimes, the best experiences come from following local recommendations.
Our tuk-tuk driver insisted we visit Bucafe, despite our initial skepticism of "tourist traps." We were pleasantly surprised by both the panoramic views and the delicious empanadas.
8. Indulge in street food delights
The island's street food scene offered us a taste of local life.
We made it a point to try toron, bananacue, and the famous charcoal ice cream you can see everyone trying. Look for small stalls and food vans along popular routes.
One evening, we stumbled upon a lone food van selling shawarma. Run by a single person, the wait was a bit long, but oh, was it worth it! The shawarma was surprisingly delicious, and the owner's hospitality made the experience even more memorable.
9. Wander and discover hidden gems
Sometimes, the best way to experience a place is to explore without a rigid plan.
We dedicated time to simply wandering around different parts of Siquijor. Whether by foot, tuk-tuk, or rented scooter, this unstructured exploration led us to charming corners we might have missed otherwise. You never know what hidden treasures or memorable experiences await when you step off the beaten path.
As people who like trying out different foods, we enjoyed discovering cafes and restaurants as we just walked around San Juan.
10. Interact with friendly locals
The warmth and kindness of Siquijor's people make any activity more memorable.
From tuk-tuk drivers to hostel staff, we were continually touched by the genuine warmth of the locals. Their stories, recommendations, and kindness transformed our trip from a simple vacation to a rich, cultural journey.
Take time to chat with locals. Their insights will enrich your experience far beyond what any guidebook can offer.
